Chemistry Majors
We offer a variety of undergraduate major options. The links below will provide the requirements for obtaining these degress.

Unofficial free of charge UWM transcripts may be obtained from the Department of Enrollment Services in Mellencamp Hall, Room 274.

In order to declare a major in Chemistry you need:
1) completion of Chem 102 & 104
2) completion or concurrent registration in Chem 343, Math 232 and Physics 209
3) A GPA of 2.5 or better in all Chemistry courses attempted.
There are 3 options: 1) Standard Major 2) Course in Chemistry 3) Biochemical Option
Standard Major Requirements
- General Chemistry 102 & 104
- Analytical Chemistry 221 or 223
- Inorganic Chemistry 311
- Organic Chemistry 343, 344 & 345
- Instrumental Analysis 524
- Physical Chemistry 561, 562, 563
- Advanced Chemistry Lab 582 or 584
- Elective: Biochemistry 501 or Advanced Inorganic 511
- Independent Research 691 or 692 or 697
- Calculus 23l, 232, 233 (Math 234 recommended)

- Physics (calculus-based) 209, 2l0, 2l4, 2l5)
Additional Options:
Course In Chemistry (Approved by the American Chemical Society)
Same as standard major except for the following changes:
- Biochemistry 501 and Advanced Inorganic 511 (must take BOTH)
- Advanced Chemistry Lab 582 and 584 (must take BOTH)
- Math 234 is required instead of recommended
- Instead of Letters & Science distribution requirement of 24 credits, only 18 credits in the humanities, social sciences and arts.
Biochemical Option
Same as standard major except for the following changes:
- Biochemistry 501 is required (not optional)
- Two Biochemistry courses: 601 or 602 or 604 or 614 are required
- Biochemistry laboratory 603 is required
- Advanced Chemistry Lab 582 and 584 is omitted
- Two biology courses are required: BioSci 150 & Genetics 325
