Minutes of the Board Meeting

May 12, 2004

Attendees:

Pam Chvilicek, John Conlon, Lisa Hempel (via teleconference), Cathy Hinkfuss, Allen Pinchard, John Engelman
Discussion Items:

Old Business

    1. PBS Auction was held April 24th.
      1. Eleven (11) registered volunteers, eight (8) attended.
      2. Movie Tickets were purchased for the volunteers; volunteers agreed to donate tickets to the auction on behalf of the WiSE TAG.
      3. A kind Thank You letter was received from the "Channel 10 Friends."
      4. Amalgamator article regarding this event was written and submitted by A. Pinchard for the next issue.

    2. Resume Writing Class was held on May 5th.
      1. It was successful despite small turnout; 15 registered, 8 attended.
      2. Instructor tailored the instruction to the needs of the audience.
      3. Class resulted in bringing in 3 new members.
      4. Amalgamator article regarding this event was written and submitted by A. Pinchard for the next issue.

  1. Future Programs Updates:
    1. Chemistry of the Hot Pepper Dinner/Lecture, presented by Prof. Elaine Radwanski, is to be held on Thursday, June 17th at 5:00pm at Casablanca De Mexico.
      1. Invites were sent out to the distribution. RSVP by June 7th.
      2. An honorarium of $100.00 will be sent to the Speaker.

    2. Members Only Social: Nothing to report at this time.
    3. Design of Experiments: Nothing to report at this time.
    4. National Chemistry Week & Family CPR class:
      Initial plans will be written up and emailed to Kristen Murphy of the ACS Local Section.
    5. Forensic Science Mystery Scenario: Nothing to report at this time.

  2. Awards Dinner Update:
    M. Neumann sent a proposal to Allen. Allen to respond.
    Note: Mike will be out of state for one month.

    Treasury Report

    • A WiSE TAG Membership Record was set up.
    • Submitted dues for three new members. New members were added onto the membership record; a Welcome Letter and information packet are to be sent out to each new member.
    • Requested $100.00 from the Local Section's WiSE TAG funds for the Chemistry of the Hot Pepper Dinner/Lecture.
    • A. Pinchard received a check for $105.00 for reimbursement of PBS Auction tickets ($55.00) and Resume Writing speaker gift card ($50).

    Strategic Planning:

    • Blank areas of plan need to be filled in.
    • Due to be completed by June 30th.

    New Business:

    1. P. Chvilicek attended the ACS Local Section Meeting in May. Highlights include:
      1. Scott Reid from the ACS Local Section is interested in co-sponsoring with the WiSE TAG a presentation from NASA.
      2. Chemagination - may do this in conjunction with Discovery World (NCW) or with Regional Meeting. Pam asked if WiSE TAG could help in any way. Response - judges may be needed.
      3. Amalgamator articles due by July 1st. Next issue comes out ~ Sept 1st.
      4. Tony Antony is looking for any more equipment that may still be around from the Midland DOW Acquisition for instrument donation to schools.
      5. Local Section is currently seeking approval for funding candidate to Leadership Training. They agree this is an acceptable item to add to the budget. They are looking for approval beginning with the 2005 attendance.
      6. Local Section agreed to add additional budget monies to send a WiSE TAG member to the ACS National Meetings starting next Spring. However, new budget proposal for this item will need to be approved first.
      7. Local Section would like to bring the WiSE TAG and the college students together for a social in the Spring. Perhaps this would be a good fit for the NASA event.
      8. Regional Meeting discussion:
        1. Locked in Hyatt Regency for May 31 - June 2, 2006.
        2. Need Awards Chair, Abstract Booklet help.
        3. Website available

    2. Regional Meeting:
      1. Need ideas for Special Events. Send ideas to Cathy Hinkfuss at CAHinkfu@scj.com.
      2. A suggestion was made to have a Franklin Wright Tour at SCJ on the Friday of Regional Meeting.

    3. Allen Pinchard accepted Chair position of the Technician Development Network (TDN) at SC Johnson. Allen decided to drop out of the WiSE TAG Chair position for next year to concentrate his leadership efforts for the TDN. Allen will still be involved with initiatives he is passionate about and plans to continue his participation as a member of the WiSE TAG. Thank you Allen for all your efforts and hard work while serving on the WiSE TAG Board.

    Meeting was adjourned at 5:00PM

    Next Meeting is June 9, 3:00pm at JMBA in Room 201.
