Graduate students M. Shahajan Kabir and Michael Van Linn (both from the Cook group) recently published paper, M. Kabir, M.L. Van Linn, A. Monte, and J.M. Cook, Organic Letters, 10, 3363-336 (2008), was chosen for it's significance by SYNFACTS, a journal dedicated to finding the most significant papers published in the field of Synthetic Organic Chemistry each month.
The paper was chosen because (quoting SYNFACTS) "This method offers a general and stereospecific access to vinyl sulfides. The vinyl sulfide functionality occurs in many biologically active compounds, including potent antibacterial agents. With this method functionalized aryl and heteroaryl sulfides as well as alkyl vinyl sulfides can easily be synthesized."
