Milwaukee Section and Amalgamator History

The Milwaukee Section of the American Chemical Society was chartered by National in December, 1908. The section was the 30th section chartered by the ACS. The Amalgamator began publication in September, 1945. Little has been saved from those first 38 years, and what is known to have happened then is related in a series of articles by E.W. Moffett that appeared in the March, 1946 and May, 1946 issues of the Amalgamator. This history has been turned into an HTML file. Click the lind below to view the article.

A second history of the Milwaukee Section was written by Carroll E. Imhoff, section chair - 1944, in 1958 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the section. A special Golden Jubilee issue of the Amalgamator was published that was largely Imhoff's history. This issue has been scanned to a PDF file. (Please note: this file is quite large at 17 MBytes.) There appears to be no surviving record of the membership in the early years of the section. The December, 1945 issue of the Amalgamator published a list of the members in 1945. There were then 288 members and 9 corporate members. Today there are 953 members who are members of the ACS and 38 local members.

To the left is a photo of the cover of the first Amalgamator. This first issue has been scanned and converted to a PDF file for viewing and printing. (Note: This is a file of about 22 megabytes.) The picture on the cover is of the then new food processing research laboratory at the Chain Belt Company in Milwaukee.
