SAACS - UWM ChapterStudent Affiliates of the American Chemical SocietyFall UpdateBy Louie Elahi, 2006 SAACS President The SAACS group at the University of Wisconsin– Milwaukee had a very productive fall semester. As many of you might have noticed, we had attendees at each of the Local Section meetings. In October, we were fortunate enough to meet ACS President, Dr. William Carroll, and hear his presentation about the future of the Chemical Enterprise. This was of particular interest to our SAACS group, because the future of the Chemical Enterprise plays a pivotal role in our budding careers. In December, we were lucky enough to see our faculty advisor, Dr. Thomas Holme, presented with the Milwaukee Section Award. Congratulations to you Dr. Holme! We would like to thank the Local Section members for making us feel welcome at these events. The SAACS group also took part in some local tours this fall. We started the semester off with an annual favorite, beer. More specifically, we learned about the chemistry of brewing (and drinking) beer at the Lakefront Brewery. In November, the SAACS group coupled with WiSE TAG and took a tour of the Milwaukee HAZMAT team's facility and equipment at Engine Company 25. We learned about emergency preparedness and how certain hazardous material situations would be addressed. Thanks to Captain Tony Wichman for his wonderful and impressive presentation. Our final tour of the semester was an extended tour of Miller brewery. Not only did we enjoy the public tour of the production facilities, but we had intriguing behind the scenes tour of the Technology Center. The SAACS group was able to see all of the amazing laboratory facilities and instrumentation that Miller houses. A special thanks to Dr. Lance Lusk, the tour was simply outstanding. We plan on continuing our active agenda into the spring and look forward to many of our upcoming events. SAACS members will continue to be in attendance at the upcoming Local Section meetings, so please feel free to share your stories, offer your advice, or just say hello. The SAACS group also eagerly looks forward to partnering with WiSE TAG again for future endeavors; a wonderful collaboration between industry and academia. We anticipate touring more local companies, specifically ones which employ chemists. Additionally, we will continue fundraising on campus to ensure that we can send our members to the upcoming National meeting in Atlanta. As "Student Affiliates" of the ACS, we hope to learn more about the Chemical Enterprise and at the same time, live up to expectations of our affiliation to the American Chemical Society. The 2006 Community Event for Chemists Celebrate Earth Day is "Plant It for the Planet". Bring the community together for a fun-filled day! Take the opportunity to talk about the importance of the chemistry of the soil - nutrients/pH, water and temperature for plant growth. more information. John graduated in 1964 from Ferris State University with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Industrial Chemistry Technology, and on May 10, 2003 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science from the same as one of the leading technicians in the United States. His career as a technician spanned 38 years until his promotion to Scientist. John has been a technician, inspector, technical specialist, and quality control manager doing research in a wide variety of areas including radio and radiation chemistry, silicone molding compounds, thermoset composite materials, thermoset molding compounds, thermoplastics, adhesives, home cleaning products, insect control and air care products. He is currently with S. C. Johnson & Son where he is leading global cost savings projects. As such, he is responsible for projects spanning not only North America product lines but also those of 58 subsidiaries doing business in over 100 countries. He is a member of the Mid-Michigan TAG, WiSETAG, the Milwaukee Section of the ACS, the Division of Chemical Technicians (TECH), and the American Chemical Society (ACS). I have been a member of the MMTG since its inception, serving on the Board of Directors as Treasurer and as an Elected Delegate. Likewise, am an active and founding member of the WiSETAG having chosen to be a mentor and advisor to its members. Currently I am the Alternate Councilor for TECH, have chaired the Division of Chemical Technicians as well as served as a Regional Coordinator, Public Relations and Strategic Planning Chairs. I have been a member of the Committee on Technician Affairs for six (6), 2006 is the last year of my three term as chair of the Committee on Technician Affairs. John sits on the Advisory Board to the Chemical Technician Programs of Milwaukee Area Technical College and Ferris State University. In addition, He is a Director at Large with the Ferris State University Alumni Association and recruits students in Wisconsin for Ferris State University. ).
Kevin W. Glaeske (b.1966) is an assistant professor of chemistry at Wisconsin Lutheran College. He received bachelor's degrees from Beloit College (1988) in both Chemistry and Classics and was elected into Phi Beta Kappa. Upon graduation, he studied synthetic organic chemistry at the University of Utah under F.G. West. He received his Ph.D. in 1995 (Thesis title: The Synthesis of a-Amino Acid Derivatives and Study of Transfer of Chirality in the Stevens Rearrangement) and was called to teach chemistry at Wisconsin Lutheran College the same year. While at WLC he has been published in such journals as Organic Letters and The American Biology Teacher and currently serves as chairman of the faculty. He is currently serving as treasurer for the local section.
Holger Foersterling is a NMR specialist in the Department of Chemistry at UW-Milwaukee. He received his Diplom in Chemistry at the Philipps Universit t Marburg, Germany in 1991. Subsequently he studied Organometallic Chemistry in the group of Dr. Craig Barnes at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN, where he graduated with a PhD in chemistry in 1996. He was then working on biomolecular NMR as a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Christian Griesinger at the Goethe Universit t Frankfurt, Germany before moving to Milwaukee in 1998. He is a member of the American Chemical Society since 1992., and he is currently serving his second term as local section secretary.
