Milwaukee Section - American Chemical Society the amalgamator |
A committee has been authorized by the board. The purpose of the committee is to make awards to area students to help defer costs to National ACS meetings when the student is to present either an oral paper or a poster. The committee is chaired by Chuck Wilkie (Marquette University) and serving with Chuck is Jim Cook (UWM) and Joe Piatt (Carroll College). The following was adopted by the board at the November 9, 1999 meeting.
"The Milwaukee Section will support the attendance of graduate and undergraduate students at National meetings if they are presenting their work in either an oral session or a poster session at that National meeting. The Section will provide up to $1000 per meeting and this will be used to support between 5 and 10 students. That is, if we support 5 students each will receive $200; if we support 10, each will receive $100. If the number is between these limits, the support will be proportionate. Each University within the Section boundaries will provide to the Section secretary a rank ordered list of students who will present their work at a meeting at least three months before the meeting. The Section will endeavor to provide equal support for each school. That is, if three schools each propose two students, all can be supported. Before a second student from one school shall be supported, one student from all other schools shall receive support.
"Each January the Section secretary shall send a letter to each University within the Section boundaries to remind them of the program and tell them of the guidelines. In this letter deadlines shall be established for the receipt of the rank ordered list of students. A committee of three as designated by the Board shall make the final determinations and the Section secretary shall so notify the University and the students. The Section treasurer shall provide payment to the students as soon as notified of their identities. Should a student selected to receive the award be unable to attend for any reason, s/he is obligated to return the money to the Section."
