MILWAUKEE SECTION
AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY
MINUTES OF THE BOARD MEETING
November 12, 2002 at 6:15 P.M.
Todd Wehr Chemistry Bldg. - Marquette University
Present:
- Tony Antony, Bud Douthitt, Jackie Behnke, Diana Bergmann, Kevin Glaeske, Dimitri Gorjestani, Steven Levsen, Tom McLinn,, Beth Shepard, Kristine Surerus, and Alan Thompson.
Minutes:
- The minutes for the previous meeting were approved with a minor revision to the Treasurer's report.
Amalgamator:
- Alan requested everything be sent by the first week of December for the January 2003 issue. The last issue was sent out to 1050 members.
Chemical Education:
- Tony ordered 75 tests for the Olympiad. He was hoping for 70 people to participate, which would be an increase over the average of 65 participants. Tony also mentioned that the first round would be March 15, 2003, and he was looking for a mentor for those students that qualify for the second round.
Membership:
- Diana reported that there had been 37 new members in the first eight months of the year.
Milwaukee Section Award:
- Jackie said that there were four people nominated for the current award. She also reminded us that this month's meeting would be honoring this year's recipient (Jennifer Runquist.
National Chemistry Week:
- Tom reported that the topic for next year would be "Earth's atmosphere and beyond." Alan took pictures at all four sessions at Discovery World. Carroll College did one of the sessions and UW-M did the other three sessions. Mike Schudder also ran a scavenger hunt on the web, which had 150 teams participating.
Nominations:
- Tom stated that Nominations needed a chair and that he had some ideas to put forth on this committee.
Treasurer:
- Tom mentioned that National would be giving our section $8849.00. Beth gave her report. There are only two outstanding bills (printing bill for the last Amalgamator and the catering bill for this month's meeting.
Long Range Planning:
- Tom reported on the October 8, 2002 meeting (which is printed in the Nov-Dec Amalgamator). Discussion took place on the student travel grant and on starting an investment pool. It was decided to keep the travel grant open to both undergraduate and graduate students.
Chair Elect:
- Steve handed out the current list of speakers for 2003. Steve has three ACS circuit speakers on the slate and there are several holes (3) in the lineup. He encouraged everyone to e-mail suggestions to him.
Councilors:
- Tom and Dimitri will be attending the next meeting in New Orleans and that the biggest issue concerned changing the by-laws to allocate more money to local sections and technical divisions.
Old Business:
- Bud asked about getting the TAG group off of the ground. Tom asked for input for the annual report.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:34PM.
