AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY
MINUTES OF THE BOARD MEETING
November 9, 2001 at 6:15 P.M.
Todd Wehr Chemistry Bldg. - Marquette University
Present:
- Tony Antony, Jackie Behnke, Kevin Glaeske, Dimitri Gorjestani, Alex Hill, Claudia Jordan, Steven Levsen, Tom McLinn, Beth Shepard, Tom Holme, Tom Thornton, and Alan Thompson.
Minutes:
- The minutes for the previous meeting were approved as read.
Treasurer:
- Beth said the budget is updated and the only things missing are some bills and some ad money. The section should post a small surplus for the year.
Chemical Education:
- Tony reported that nominations were going out for Teacher of the Year. Tom said that he had a tour speaker who would talk about the Chemistry and Biochemistry of Chocolate for the April meeting.
Continuing Education:
- Jackie asked people to consider topics for future courses. It was stated that the section made 650.00 on the last short course.
Membership:
- Diana reported that there had been three renewals.
Milwaukee Section Award:
- Bud has three candidates for this year's award.
National Chemistry Week:
-
Project Seed:
- Jackie reported that the project was looking for mentors.
Publicity:
- Some photographs were going to be taken at Discovery World during NCW and the Journal-Sentinel was contacted about getting a reporter as well.
Amalgamator:
- Alan says that the mail is coming out slow even with a first class stamp. The web page is becoming the new archives and that he may remove the centerfold directory in future issues or reduce it's print. Alan asked if there was a way to post local seminar talks on the web site so other institutions would be aware of other these activities.
Councilor:
- Tom stated that funding opportunities for invited speakers was quite low. He also stated that chem.org, which is replacing acs.org, was worth the visit and that the people responsible for this web site would come and show the section the ins and outs of the site. Read the latest councilor report.
Chairperson-elect:
- Tom reported on a conference attended in Nashville during October. He also handed out a list of speakers for the upcoming year. Most everything was in place with the exception of a venue for February 2002. He was open to suggestions for a venue (e.g. Miller Park).
Old Business:
- Jackie stated that the next Amalgamator would have information about a TAG group forming. The membership directory was also discussed. Tom Thornton expressed a desire to re-issue that directory again next spring. He also mentioned that we could apply for a grant to get it published. It was mentioned that Aldrich might place an ad in the directory.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:14PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Kevin Glaeski
