MINUTES OF THE BOARD MEETING

November 8, 2005 at 7:18PM
Approved January 10, 2006
Chemistry Department, Marquette University
Present:
Scott Reid, Kristene Surerus, Alan Thompson, Tom Thornton, Holger Foersterling, Kevin Glaeske.
Minutes:
The minutes of the March 8 meeting were approved as presented, and the minutes from the September 13 meeting were approve with minor corrections.
Chair's Remarks:
The next section meeting will be on November 28 at Marquette. The Section award will be presented at that meeting.
Joe Piatt plans to have no speaker for the January meeting but envisions instead a networking event to draw new volunteers. It was a consensus that one will onli get people to show up if free food is offered. Alan suggested to get TAG involved. Tom Holme suggested a venue like the Lakefront Brewery.
We also should have an event for Earth Day. That would give us a Spring event in addition to National Chemistry Week in fall. We should get SC Johnson involved in that.
Past Chair's Remarks:
Tom Holme is this years Section Award winner.
TAG Report:
Nobody from the TAG group was present.

Committee Reports
Amalgamator:
The Amalgamator should be mailed the next day. Alan has inquired for successors to take over the web page and the newsletter. Peter Peterson has offered to do the newsletter, and Holger has offered to help out with the web page. John Picione is willing to take over both.

Instrument Program
Peter has another FT-IR to donate from Cooper in Waukesha.

Publicity:
Bill Carroll had a one hour interview with a Journal Sentinel reporter. It has not yet been published.

Treasurer:
A copy of the latest budget report is attached. We are still well below the losses projected for 2005. The 2006 budget will be presented in January.

National Chemistry Week:
There were only four shows at Discovery World. They had again a new person organizing the event and contacted High schools way too late. The scavenger hunt had more submitted answers than ever. There were 22 teams answering all questions. We has less posters than expected. They will be graded tomorrow.

Great Lakes Regional Meeting:
The planning committee will meet tomorrow. The calls for papers have been submitted and will appear in C&En News in a couple of weeks. The technical program has outgrown the space available in the Hyatt. Additional space has been reserved in the Midway Express Center. They are also working on organizing an event at the Milwaukee Art Museum. The blanket reservation for major departments appears to be well received and should attract more graduate students to the meeting. Financially we can expect around $10000 in sponsorship.

Old Business:
There was no old business.
New Business:
The board voted unanimously that the chair should write a thank you letter to Bob Ponton before his move to Ohio. He has been the speaker at three meetings.
Next Meeting:
Next meeting: We will meet again in January. The exact date and location will be TBA.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:05PM

Respectfully submitted, Frank-Holger Foersterling, Secretary
