MILWAUKEE SECTION
AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY

MINUTES OF THE BOARD MEETING

September 16, 2003
Todd Wehr Chemistry Bldg. - Marquette University
Chair's Remarks:
Levsen commented on the programming for meetings for this fall. He noted his appreciation to Cardinal Stritch for their hospitality at the September meeting. He has received several comments about the quality of the venue for a Local Section meeting. He also thanked UWM for it's efforts to host the upcoming October meeting.
Past Chair's Remarks:
McLinn mentioned that there is still interest in having Milwaukee host the Great Lakes Regional Meeting in 2006. He is working with ACS national and will look to pass on these duties to a volunteer who will serve as General Chair of the conference. He is still interested in working on cleaning up the bylaws for the Local Section as well, but this project will be slow to complete.
TAG Report:
Members of the TAG group, including officers Cathy Hinkfuss and Pam Chvilicek, were present at the board meeting. They noted that they learned some interesting ideas for how to improve and expand the TAG group during their trip to the ACS meeting in New York. The main challenge remains getting involvement from technicians from more companies.
Committee Reports
Amalgamator:
The last Amalgamator was out early and the online version remains the best way to update information. The November Amalgamator needs to be set, so the Section Award committee needs to act on the 2003 award as soon as possible (because the announcement of that award is a major component of the Nov. Amalgamator.)
Milwaukee Section Award:
The committee is working on the evaluation of the applicants. The pool of possible winners remains strong.
National Chemistry Week:
Holme reported that the NCW committee has been working on shows for Discovery World and on increasing participation in the poster contest for K-12 students.
Treasurer:
Shepard was not able to attend the meeting. Members of the Board looked at the budget and found no matters of major concern.
Long Range Planning:
The two main topics for this committee are the 2006 Great Lakes Meeting and the revision of the bylaws. Committee meetings for this year have already been scheduled and publicized.
Councilors:
No major actions were taken at the Council meeting in New York. The passage of the financial redistribution by member vote from this past summer was passed. The ACS constitution has thus been amended. This should mean more money coming into the Local Section over the next few years. The cost of attending the meeting in New York was discussed - while there have been no specific indications about meeting venues, the impression left on the Councilors is that it will be uncommon for the ACS to return to New York for it's national meetings, in part because of cost and in part because the venues tend to be spread out. The next national meeting is in Anaheim next spring.
