MILWAUKEE SECTION
AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY

MINUTES OF THE BOARD MEETING

September 14, 1999 at 6:20 P.M.
Todd Wehr Chemistry Bldg. - Marquette University
Present:
Jackie Behnke, Katie Bichler, Mary Doyle, Dimitri Georgestani, Claudia Jordan, Mike McKinney, Tom McLinn, Jennifer Runquist, Kristene Surerus, Chuck Wilkie
Secretary’s Minutes:
The minutes for the previous meeting were approved as submitted.
Chair Remarks:
It was noted that the Amalgamator came out relatively late due to a number of factors beyond the editor’s control. It was suggested that the mailing go out first class rather than fourth class in the future if it occurs again. The Board was very enthusiastic about the Amalgamator appearing on the web.
Treasurer’s Report:
Katie Bichler reported that the budget is on track to break even for the year. As discussed in the previous meeting, Katie split the ~$10000 CD that came due into two different CDs, one for 180 days and the other for 1 year.
Publicity:
Mary Doyle and Claudia Jordan reported that the monthly Section meetings will be announced in the Milwaukee Sentinel Journal and in the CNI newspapers. Also, they will be providing information to National’s web site which has a section for listing local section meetings. Mary and Claudia are also looking for volunteers to post notices of the monthly Section meetings at their workplaces.
Milwaukee Section Award:
There are three nominees and the committee of six members is currently ranking them. The award will be presented at the November meeting at Alverno College and invitations will go out to past winners.
National Chemistry Week:
Mike McKinney has agreed to chair this committee this year. Discovery World will host chemistry demonstrations for ~2500 children. Mike is setting up 10 teams of two people to do the demonstrations.
Nominations:
This committee stills needs a chair.
Councilor’s:
Dmitri Georgestani and Chuck Wilkie presented their report on the National meeting in New Orleans. In addition, they noted that National is proposing to increase councilor reimbursement to $1000/meeting.
New Business:
Chuck Wilkie and Dmitri Georgestani proposed that the Section subsidize undergraduate and graduate students who attend and present their work at National meetings up to $200. The Board was favorable to this proposal and thought this might be an appropriate use of the money from the Great Lakes Regional Meeting. A cap of $1000 per meeting was proposed to be split among a maximum of 10 students. The Board did not want to make this into a competition and discussed how the money would be distributed if more applied than there were funds for. Options included, limiting the award to one individual/research group and equal division among the colleges and universities. A proposal with details on running the program will be discussed and voted on at the next Board meeting.

It was proposed that the Section could use a historian to help keep track of the Section’s records such as the Amalgamator, annual reports and financial records. The Amalgamator is deposited at the Milwaukee public library and UWM’s library but there currently is no official repository for the Section’s records. Marquette University is willing to provide space for a file cabinet for the records but someone is needed to oversee the records.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Kristene Surerus
