MILWAUKEE SECTION
AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY

MINUTES OF THE BOARD MEETING

September 12, 2000 at 6:25 P.M.
Todd Wehr Chemistry Bldg. - Marquette University
Present:
Jackie Behnke, Katie Bichler, Mary Bishop, Mary Doyle, Dimitri Gorjestani, Alex Hill, Tom Holme, Tom McLinn, and Alan Thompson.
Minutes:
The minutes were approved as read with no changes.
Amalgamator:
Alan Thompson reported that the amalgamator was late going to the printer due to a number of reasons, but mainly that he had other commitments that interfered. The mailing this time was done without labels, but with the names and addresses being supplied on disk and printed, with the mailing bar code, directly onto the pamphlet. This was to speed the mailing and delivery process.
Alan also reported that with the two donations of old amalgamators, he would be able to put together two sets of bound amalgamators, one to be housed at Marquette and the other to be housed at UWM.
Alan also noted that there are a number of miscellaneous records, including a copyright of a single copy of the amalgamator. These will be organized and placed in storage at Marquette. Alex Hill said he would look into seeing if the copyright needs to be renewed.
Chemical Education:
The May Awards meeting will be held at Carroll College, or maybe Discovery World. Councillor Tom Holme reported that the SOCED committee wants to start affiliate groups at high schools.
Continuing Education:
Jackie Behnke said that Bob Goss indicated would like to start some courses in industries in the area.
Membership:
Tom McLinn said that National is instituting a Member Get a Member program to increase membership. There is to be a $15 bonus for each new member and the one who gets the most members will be given a trip to a 2001 National meeting.
Milwaukee Section Award:
Bud Douhitt reported that there are three candidates for the award.
National Chemistry Week:
Dale Orth resigned. Jackie is effectively overseeing the duties. It was noted that the job is not as big as it used to be. Discovery World will do the fund-raising and arranging for the school groups. Tom Holme said that the UWM Chem. Ed. division will do some coordination, and use SAACS groups to do the food drives. Anne Arendt will coordinate getting volunteers to put on shows. The theme this year is Kitchen Chemistry.
Nominations:
The position is vacant and Mary Bishop will have to find members to fill the open posts.
Project Seed:
The one student did not complete the project under his mentor, Dr. Diane Munzenmaier at the Medical College of Wisconsin. The mentor will present the poster at the September meeting.
Publicity:
Mary Doyle said that she would get out some e-mail publicity about the up coming September meeting. She also would get out publicity to the newspapers about NCW.
Treasurer:
Katie Bichler reported that our total assets in cash and bank accounts was $23,020.75. The cash flow is effected by the fact that the allotment from National had not been received because the annual report had not been submitted..
Councilors:
Please refer to the Councilors' Report (on page 6 of the printed issue). There was some discussion about how to get technicians involved in the Section, and also to form a TAG group. It was thought that a meeting in January or February could be devoted to technicians.
Alternate Councilors:
Nothing to report.
Chair-elect Remark:
Mary Bishop reported that she tentatively had arranged for speakers for the March, April, September and October 2001 meetings. January and February meetings had yet to be set.
Old Business:
None.
New Business:
None.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:45PM.

Respectfully submitted,
