MILWAUKEE SECTION
AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY
MINUTES OF THE BOARD MEETING
September 3, 2002 at 6:20 P.M.
Todd Wehr Chemistry Bldg. - Marquette University
Present:
- Dimitri Gorjestani, Tom Holme, Jackie Behnke, Beth Shepard, Steve Levsen, Mary Doyle, Diana Bergmann, Tony Antony, and Tom McLinn.
Minutes:
- The minutes for the previous meeting were approved as written.
Amalgamator:
- The latest issues were sent to the Post Office on Aug. 27, 2002. A record number of copies were mailed, 1,040. One advertiser was lost.
Chemical Education:
- Tony reported that he will save $50 annually by using email over the postal service. He would like to divide this money up and present it as awards to alternate Olympiads not placing in the top slots. To train the Olympiads, the concept of tutors is being looked into.
Membership:
- Diana reported that there have been 12 new affiliate members in 2002. The total affiliate member list has 37 members total. Recruitment of new members at the section meetings is encouraged and another flier is planned for distribution later in the year.
Milwaukee Section Award:
- Jackie reported that 4 candidates have been nominated this year. The full selection committee has been chosen and will meet in the near future to choose this year's recipient.
National Chemistry Week:
- Mike Schuder is heading the committee for NCW. The theme is Chemistry Keeps Us Clean. NCW will be held October 20 – 26th, 2002. Volunteers are needed.
Nominations:
- Next year there will be no councilor elections since it is an off-year for those elections.
Publicity:
- Mary reported that many emails came back to her stating that the address was unknown or wrong. Mary requested that if anyone has changed their email address, please contact her with an updated address.
Treasurer:
- Beth reported that all of our advertisers' dues were paid and current. The bill for The Amalgamator printing and mailing had been paid. There will be 3 C.D.s renewing in 2003.
Chair Elect:
- Steve reported that 2 speakers had been set up for 2003 through the Speaker's Series.
Long Range Planning: - The next meeting is scheduled for October 8, 2002.
Councilors:
- At the Boston meeting, changes in the by-laws were considered that would increase the amount of funding that is allocated to local sections and technical division. Councilors would like feedback from Milwaukee section members since a vote is expected at the next meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:54PM.
