MINUTES OF THE BOARD MEETING

May 13, 2003 at 6:25 P.M.
Todd Wehr Chemistry Bldg. - Marquette University

Present:

Jackie Benke, Tony Antony, Diana Bergman, Bud Duhitt, Kevin Glaeske, Dimitri Gorjestani, Kathy Hinkfuss,, Steven Levsen, Tom McLinn, Kristene Surerus, Holger Foersterling, Alan Thompson and Pam Chvilicek.

Minutes:

The minutes for the previous meeting were approved as read. The election results were given.

Chair's Remarks:

Steve read a letter from the engineering department (UW-Milwaukee) asking for a gift of 5000.00 for their Rube Goldberg contest. Tony stated that since no chemicals were used we should not give the gift. Tony then stated the teacher of the year asked to use his honorarium for a digital camera.

Past Chair's Remarks:

Tom introduced K. Hinkfuss and P. Chvilicek from Johnson Wax and they explained that they had started a TAG group (10 people) and wanted to work with the local section in getting the group off the ground. They were having a membership meeting on May 20, 2003. Alan said he has space on the web-site for the TAG group.

Amalgamator:

Alan reminded everyone that July1 is the absolute deadline for the September issue. Alan did state that we now have another advertiser (Baxter Laboratory).

Chemical Education:

This Saturday is the Chemistry Olympiad is over. Two students scored in the top 35, but no one made the final team. Tony did talk about an instrument sharing program among local high schools. He is looking for space to house donated instruments until they are claimed. Alan suggested that wither MATC or WCTC might be worth asking about utilizing their facilities. Steve said he would ask both places.

Membership:

Diana passed around copies of the form for people if they wanted to join the local section. She will update the flyer in time for next September and October.

Milwaukee Section Award:

Tom says that he has three nominations for the current year. September1, is the deadline for nominations. The award would be decided by October 1, 2003. Jackie suggested moving up the deadline so that all the information could be put in the Amalgamator in a timely fashion.

Treasurer:

Beth gave her report, which is attached.

Long Range Planning:

Tom asked National about hosting the 2006 Great Lakes Regional Meeting. Tom met with the TAG group April 8, 2003. The next meeting is Oct. 7, 2003.

Councilors:

Dimitri said ballots would be coming in the mail (late May-early June) dealing with a change in the by-laws so it is important that everyone vote. The vote will deal with National giving money to the different divisions in ACS that have requested a subsidy.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:17PM.
