Secretary's Minutes:
- The minutes for the previous meeting were approved as submitted.
Chair Remarks:
- Jennifer Runquist reported that the annual report is almost completed.
Treasurer's Report:
- Katie Bichler reported current balances of $93.20 inchecking and ~$16000 in savings/CDs. One of the CDs for about $10000 is coming due and the Board passed a motion to split the amount into two separate CDs for different terms (one for 1 year and the other for 2 years). The National allotment has not been received. Taxes have been filed. The short course had just enough enrollment to run the program and made the Section $270.
Chem Ed:
- Ken Miller reported that ten students took the Chemistry Olympiad test. Wei Ho, third time taking the test, did well and will be going the training camp at the Air Force Academy again this year. The four top qualifying students will be honored at the May meeting. Kathleen Johnson was awarded the teacher of the year award and will be the guest of honor at the May meeting. Ken Miller announced that this will be his last year as chair of the Chem Ed committee. The Board thanked him for his years of service.
Career Services:
- Ken Miller will provide brochures at the September meeting about basic information on this program. He will be attending a conference in early June to get updated information.
Publicity:
- Jennifer Runquist needs a paragraph on articles about the Local Section for the annual report.
Amalgamator:
- Sharbil Firsan will be stepping down as editor and will be happy to discuss what is involved in the position with anyone interested. Alan Thompson is interested and will contact Sharbil. The Board thanked Sharbil for all his efforts at putting out the Amalgamator for the last three years.
Councilors:
- Both Dmitri Georgestani and Chuck Wilkie will be going to the National meeting in August.
Old Business:
- Bud Douthitt is working on putting together an email
broadcast list of the Local Section membership. Bud is also
working on putting together a Creative Student Award for
National Chemistry Week. He proposed that it be announced to
the school system as a contest for innovative discovery and
that a scholarship of $1000 to $3000 be awarded. He will
work on putting together a concrete proposal and will work
with the Board on what the expectations and criteria would
be for this award.
New Business:
- Mike McKinney reported that Discovery World would like to
again have the Local Section put on demonstrations during
National Chemistry Week. Discovery World is willing to do
the mailings if the Local Section will provide the volunteers
for giving the demonstrations. Mike McKinney will look into
seeing whether this can be organized for this fall.
- Tom Thornton attended the Board meeting with a proposal
to develop a membership directory. The Board passed a motion
authorizing Tom to look into ad solicitation to defray the
costs of the directory and to begin working on updating the
membership list information. The current membership list
provided by National on disk will be emailed to Tom as a
starting point. Tom will start with those members who have
email addresses to request updated information. The Board
approved up to $200 for mailing costs for requesting updated
information from members without known email addresses.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:05 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Kristene Surerus
