MINUTES OF THE BOARD MEETING

May 11, 2004 at 6:20PM
Approved September 21, 2004
ACS Exams Institute, Chemistry Building, Univ. Wisconsin-Milwaukee
Present:
Kristene K. Surerus, Tom Holme, Holger Foersterling, Tony Antony, Kevin Glaeske, Pam Chvilicek, Alan Thompson.
Minutes:
The amended minutes from the March 9 board meeting were approved.
Chair's Remarks:
The annual report is not yet on the web page. Alan Thompson has not received it yet. The thank you letter from David Kreutz, last years High School Teacher's Award winner, has been posted.
The September dinner meeting will be held at Cardinal Stritch University. The 50 year members will be honored at that meeting. Scott Reid agreed to the next January meeting to be co hosted with the TAG group. He thinks that a NASA speaker sounds like a good idea.
ACS offers crime insurance to local sections at no cost. The coverage is up to $500,000 with a $2500 deductible.
Past Chair's Remarks:
(Read by Kristene Surerus.) Steve will get the plaques back to Tony.
TAG Report:
A complete report is attached. Five new members were recruited, two during the Brewery Tour / Hockey Game social event and three more through the Resume Writing/Interviewing Skills Class.
Amalgamator:
Mailing problems again delayed the distribution of the Amalgamator, it took up to 10 days. It has to be sent out earlier as it is going by third class mail. He wants to receive material for the next issue by July 1 so it can be in members mailboxes by September 1. We maintained our nine advertisers.
Chemical Education:
Teacher of the year award includes $300 honorarium. He has not yet received a spending proposal from Jane Schneider, the last winner. He received an e-mail from David Stark in New York offering to donate a table top NMR spectrometer (Minispect type). Daniel Sem at Marquette University is interested. It appeard we are the only section with an instrument donation program.
Treasurer:
A copy of the latest budget is attached. Meeting income has been going down. The Amalgamator being late may have contributed. The dependence on ACS tour speakers is a problem as it keeps the weekday of the meeting changing. A line for TAG travel will be added into the 2005 budget. Also add a travel award for TAG. In that context a cooperation between TAG and two year colleges was discussed.
Councilors:
Bylaw changes to enable electronic balloting will be introduced at the Philadelphia meeting. Another bylaw change enabling secondary chemistry teachers to become ACS members will be introduced.
Great Lakes Regional Meeting:
The 2006 Great Lakes Regional meeting now has a web page (http://alchemy.chem.uwm.edu/GLRM06/index.html). The contract with the Hyatt has been signed. The positions of Abstract and Award chairs are still open. Kristene offered to serve as Abstract chair if nobody else volunteers.
Other Remarks:
The next board meetings will be Sept. 21 and Nov. 16. The next Dinner meetings will be Sept. 14 and Nov. 19. The date for the October meeting has not yet set.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:35PM

Respectfully submitted, Frank-Holger Foersterling, Secretary
