AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY

MINUTES OF THE BOARD MEETING

March 11, 2003 at 6:15 P.M.
Todd Wehr Chemistry Bldg. - Marquette University
Present:
Tony Antony, Kevin Glaeske, Dimitri Gorjestani, Tom Holme, Steven Levsen, Tom McLinn, Kristene Surerus, Peter Petersen, Holger Foersterling, Beth Shepard, and Alan Thompson.
Minutes:
The minutes for the previous meeting were approved as read.
Chair's Remarks:
Steve stated that John Gilder is coming for the April meeting. Steve is expecting this to be a popular meeting. Steve also received an email from C. Hinkfuss (of S.E. Johnson) wanting to get some information from the section about starting a TAG group. Tom stated he would go and talk to the TAG people on April 8, 2003.
Past Chair's Remarks:
Tom stated that he got the Annual report finished and thanked all those that helped with the process.
Amalgamator:
Alan reminded everyone that April 1 is the deadline for the May issue. He also reminded everyone of the upcoming election. July 1 would be the deadline for the September issue.
Chemical Education:
Teacher of the Year has been chosen (David Kreutz of Burlington High School) This Saturday is the Chemistry Olympiad. Second level testing will be held in April and the winners will be announced during the April meeting as will the Teacher of the Year. Tony is also trying to find summer positions for high school students in industry.
Membership:
Currently we have 937 members in the section according to National.
Milwaukee Section Award:
Tom says that he has three nominations for the current year. He asked Alan to run an ad asking for more nominations.
National Chemistry Week:
M. Schudder would be able to help for another year. Tom Holme said that he had given some names to him from the survey. He would check to see if Mike had gotten them.
Nominations:
Most of the offices have people willing to run in the upcoming election.
Publicity:
Steve will talk to Mary about getting some more PR.
Treasurer:
Beth gave her report, which is attached. Currently, everything is up to date with the exception of one outstanding bill. A CD is coming due in May and the section needs to decide if we want to cash it or let it roll over on a three-year cycle.

Chair-Elect:
Kristene attended a leadership conference in Washington D.C. this February. She said it was informative although a bit generic.
Councilors:
Tom Holme gave a power-point presentation pertaining to his work on the PR and Communications committee that he sits on as Councilor. The presentation focused on the generation known as the Millennials and how to get them involved in the ACS. The board also filled out a survey once the presentation was finished. There will be an important vote at the New Orleans about a new funding formula for local sections. Click here for their full report.
