Past Chair's Remarks:
- Steve found out where to send send the $500 of Mike McKinney's section award.
Chemical Education:
- There were no new nomination submitted for the Teacher of the Year award. There were four active nominations from last year. The committee selected Jane Schneider. She can not attend the April meeting, but Steve suggested to invite her to the May meeting. The first round of the Chemistry Olympiad is this Saturday, round two will take place at Carroll College on April 15. The instrument donation program is making progress. Aldrich is giving water baths to somebody in Port Washington. More is to come from Mt. Mary (balances).
TAG Report:
- The complete report is attached. Pam highlighted a brewery tour / hockey game and the upcoming PBS auction. Allen went to the leadership training in New Orleans. He asked whether there were local section funds available for such activities (for course material, registration, lodging). The employer typically pays travel expenses. It was suggested to add a line item to the budget, but there was no quorum tonight. Kevin suggested to send receipts to him. As long TAG is subgroup they can use tax exemption number of local section.
Section Award:
- There are currently three active applicants. Steve will try to get more nominations. The criteria are somewhat vague, but in the past it was given mainly for academic research, but service to the section has also been honored.
National Chemistry Week:
- Nothing new to report, but it was suggested that TAG should be involved.
Nominations:
- Dimitri has names for Chair elect. Industry candidates are desired. Holger and Kevin agreed to run for secretary / treasurer again. One councilor is up for reelection, Kristene is not sure who. Steve is willing to run if nobody else can be found.
Treasurer:
- An updated copy of revenue and expenses is attached. It was noted that the line item for the TAG group is missing on that sheet. He has not yet sent the checks to the travel award winners. This years award goes to four schools (UWM, Marquette, Carthage and Carroll). It was suggested to require students to present their work at the May section meeting. Kevin will mention that when sending the check. It was decided to make it a requirement from the August national meeting on. Allen suggested to add an award for one TAG member / year..
Long Range Planning:
- Steve said that the Great Lakes Regional Meeting was the only topic discussed.
Councilors:
- Tom and Dimitri are going to Anaheim. Electronic balloting will be discussed at that meeting. This will require a bylaw change. Mailing costs will be reduced.
Great Lakes Regional Meeting:
- Tom reported that a contract will be signed with the Hyatt in Milwaukee next week. The meeting will take place Wed. through Fri. Morning. Friday afternoon events will have to go somewhere else. There will be at most 20 symposia. Kathy will be special events chair. Special events may include an awards banquet and an Aldrich tour. Dimitri and Stan will spearhead fundraising. Both an Awards Chair and a Programs and Abstract Chair are still needed. Steve mentioned that the natural sciences department at Mt. Mary offered assistance.
Old Business:
- None.
New Business:
- Allen suggested joint meetings of TAG and local section. Not possible this year, but maybe next year. He suggested speaker from forensics, fireworks or NASA. Decisions on that issue will have to wait for Scott Reid to return.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:45PM
Respectfully submitted, Frank-Holger Foersterling, Secretary
