MILWAUKEE SECTION
AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY
MINUTES OF THE BOARD MEETING
January 27, 2004 at 6:15PM
ACS Exams Institute, Chemistry Building, Univ. Wisconsin-Milwaukee
Present:
- Kristene Surerus, Frank-Holger Foersterling, Kevin Glaeske, Dimitri Gorjestani, Thomas Holme, Alan Thompson, and Beth Shepard.
Minutes:
- The minutes for the previous meeting were approved.
Chair's Remarks:
- The current list of speakers for 2004 was handed out. The April, May and September speakers are ACS tour speakers, hence some of those meetings will be at unusual weekdays. The section award will be at the Nov. 12 meeting. The theme of Earthday (April 2) will be "Everything about Water". We have to start looking for a new Chair elect. The preference is somebody form industry. Dimitry thinks it is important to have somebody with committee experience.
Past Chair's Remarks:
- (read by chair) Chuck Wilkie has Milwaukee Section award plaque for 1958-1980. He is also checking the basement at Marquette for other old ACS items. He suggests a small gift for Bruce Warren. Tom Holmes suggest an ACS coffee mug or certificate of appreciation. Steve still does not know where to send the $500 of the section award to Mike McKinney, but he will keep after him.
TAG Report:
- There was a meeting on Jan. 15. They will have a budget proposal by the end of the month. They plan two educational seminars, 2-3 educational presentations, 2 social events and 4 community service opportunities. For example they will be staffing phones at the Channel10/36 auction
Amalgamator:
- Alan wants everything for the next issue by the end of the week so everything is in time for the March 5 meeting. There will be another issue for May with election information. We lost Cooper Power as advertiser. The last mailing of the Amalgamator went out to about 1000 people. Tom wants to know whether 1000 members is the threshold regarding number of finalists at Chemistry Olympiad.
Chemical Education:
- Invitations for Chem Olympiad have been sent out. Round 1 will be at AHS, and the national exam at Carroll College. A letter discussing instrument donation program has been sent with the invitations. Several instruments have been requested. Teacher of the year mailing have been sent out, no responses yet. Tony is still looking for e-mail addresses of teachers at City of Milwaukee schools.
Membership:
- Membership is down to 24 (non-national ACS). We need more publicity like posting flyers. Sample flyers were provided.
Treasurer:
- We got the bill for Amalgamator and postage. There were 35 fully paying participants at the last meeting at UW-Parkside, 8 students and 4 board members. Beth will be finishing her part of the annual report by end of next week. The deadline is Feb. 15. The 2004 budget was by large copied from the 2003 budget. After some discussion it was decided to add $1500 for TAG and increase the publicity budget to $200 at the expense of the dinner budget which was never fully used in recent years. Also several unused budget items were removed. The final budget passed unanimously. A detailed copy of the budget is attached. It was also suggested to send Mary to an ACS public relations seminar.
Long Range Planning:
- The next meeting will be at February 10.
Councilors:
- Dimitry will be at the National meeting. Tom is no longer on the Committee of Public Relations and Communication as he got appointed to SAACS.
Old Business:
- Holger reported that the letters regarding nominations for travel award recipients went out. There are replies from three colleges with five nominees. We should not send those solicitations to Sheboygan and Manitowoc as they are outside our area.
New Business:
- Tom suggested to put the planning for GLRM 2006 on the next agenda. Hotels in downtown Milwaukee are already full for the time of the meeting. Lake Geneva was mentioned as an option. They are 1/3 of the cost compared to UWM. A formal proposal is in progress.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:20PM
Respectfully submitted, Frank-Holger Foersterling, Secretary
