MINUTES OF THE BOARD MEETING

January 11, 2005 at 6:25PM
Approved March 8, 2005
Chemistry Building, Marquette University
Present:
Alan Thompson, Scott Reid, Tom Holme, Dimitri Gorjestani.
Minutes:
The minutes of the Nov. 16 Board Meeting were approved without changes.
Chair's Remarks:
We will not be able to have a joined meeting with the TAG group in January. We will get an ACS tour speaker and have a combined Jan/Feb meeting on Feb. 15. For March we are planning a joined meeting with the Madison section. David Ryder from Miller Brewing Co. volunteered. It was debated whether the Miller Inn was large enough, but as the meeting is on St. Patrick's day (March 17) we do not expect a problem with too many people.
The April and May meetings (April 11 and May 10) will also feature ACS tour speakers. No location has been chosen yet. Cardinal Stritch University was discussed as a possibility, other options included Carroll College or Discovery World. The May 10 date may be in conflict with graduation/finals at colleges.
Amalgamator:
The Amalgamator is running late this time, but it will be at the printer by Monday, and members should get it at the end of the month. It will be the 60th volume.
Chemical Education:
Tom reported that Tony is ready for the chemistry olympiad and the teacher of the year award.
Treasurer:
Scott mentioned that Kevin was working on the budget. It will be ready for the next meeting.
Councilors:
Tom and Dimitri will be at the San Diego meeting. Tom is still a SOCED member. No big issues are expected this time.
Great Lakes Regional Meeting:(http://alchemy.chem.uwm.edu/GLRM06/index.html)
The planning committee met in December. Joe Alstadt will will be General Co Chair with Tom Holmes. The next meeting will be a week from today.
Old Business:
Alan reminded the board that we need nominations for the Section Award. There is only one candidate on the list. Kristene is the head of the committee and nominations should be addressed to her. Nominees should have a record as distinguished scientist, service to the section, innovations in the local area or several of the above.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:10PM

Respectfully submitted, Frank-Holger Foersterling, Secretary
