MILWAUKEE SECTION
AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY

MINUTES OF THE BOARD MEETING

January 9, 2001 at 6:25 P.M.
Todd Wehr Chemistry Bldg. - Marquette University
Present:
Jackie Behnke, Diana Bergmann, Dimitri Gorjestani, Tom Holme, Tom McLinn, Beth Shepard, and Alan Thompson.
Minutes:
The minutes of both the November 7, 2000 meeting and the Emergency November 21, 2001 meeting were read. It was noted that Claudia Jordan was in attendance and Beth Shepard was not in attendance at the Emergency meeting. The minutes were then approved.
Chair Comments:
Jackie Behnke reviewed a part of the Annual Report and its Strategic Thrust.
  • Tom Holme discussed the idea that the section could act as a clearing house for tours of industry by school groups.
  • Jackie Behnke thought that the amalgamator could feature a company each month.
  • It was thought that a SAACS group would be selected for receiving free dinners at the monthly meetings. This would be used to get more involvement by the SAACS groups.
  • Another idea wopuld be to bring to the board meetings public officials to discuss issues that might involve the section.
  • Tom Holme suggested the section contact CESA-1 for content experts for grade school curriculum improvement. Science standards could be publicized in the amalgamator.
Amalgamator:
Alan reported that we had a new advertiser in the Amalgamator bringing the total number of ads to eleven.
Chemical Education:
Jackie Behnke thinks that the Education Meeting should be changed from May to April to attract more interest. She was working with Tony Antony on this.
Continuing Education:
Jackie reported on Continuing Education. Bob Goss has set up a short course (Statistical Analysis of Laboratory Data) at Marquette University (March 7-9, 2001). People can sign either on the web page or use the blue insert in the November issue of the Amalgamator.
Membership:
Diana Bergmann is assuming membership duties from Tom McLinn. It is hoped that membership materials can be placed on the web.
Section Award:
There are two nominees from last year. Thus the committee is looking for an additional nominee. Deadline for nominations is September 1, 2001. Nomination materials will be on the amalgamator web site.
National Chemistry Week:
Tom Holme will submit two entries for the Phoenix Award, one being the SAACS contest for the food drive.
Nominations:
A chair is needed.
Treasurer:
The board looked at the budget. Comments will be brought up at the next meeting.
Chair-elect:
Tom McLinn will be attending training in San Antonio on February 9, 2001.
Old Business:
Jackie will try to talk to John Englemann about progress on starting a TAG group and a web page and the May meeting. We also need to put travel awards into the budget.
New Business:
Tom Holme thinks we need a table at the ACS National Meeting in Chicago to advertise the 2002 Great Lakes Regional Meeting. We may want to have a call for papers then. (Note: the 2002 Great Lakes Regional Meeting will be held in Minneapolis, MN)
The meeting was adjourned at 8:10PM.

Respectfully submitted,
Alan Thompson for Kevin Glaeski
