MINUTES OF THE BOARD MEETING

January 8, 2002 at 6:16 P.M.
Todd Wehr Chemistry Bldg. - Marquette University
Present:
Jackie Behnke, Diana Bergmann, Mary Doyle, Bud Douthitt, Kevin Glaeske, Tom McLinn, Beth Shepard, Tom Holme, and Tom Thornton.
Minutes:
The minutes for the previous meeting were approved as read.
Amalgamator:
Tom Holme mentioned there was an omission concerning National Chemistry Week. (Editor - This was corrected on the web page.).
Chemical Education:
It was reported that nominations for Teacher of the Year are due in Feb. and that the Chemistry Olympiad is going to be March 16.
Membership:
Diana reported that there had been several renewals. She also made some bulletins to be hung at places of employment and it was suggested that the bulletin be given to Alan to put on the section's web-site.
Milwaukee Section Award:
Tom encouraged nominations for this award and mentioned there were seven members on this committee and that nominations are due by September.
National Chemistry Week:
Tom Holme reported that UW-M will be unlikely to help as much as it did this past year. Tom also stated that the ‘WEB Hunt' went really well and would be in the running for a Phoenix award for best contest.
Nominations:
Tom stated that Nominations needed a chair and that he had some ideas to put forth on this committee.
Publicity:
Mary reported that she was taking large numbers of photographs but that it was hard to get the Journal-Sentinel to notice section activities. It was noted that CNI press was more friendly towards reporting local activities.
Treasurer:
Beth presented the 2002 budget and this generated much discussion. The board considered whether to raise dues for the section or to terminate some of the dinner meetings or stop subsidizing students attending the meetings.
Project Seed:
Jackie reported that the project was still looking for mentors. She said that Lance Lusk would help, but that he could not head the program. At this rate Project Seed would be unlikely to continue.
Old Business:
Tom Thornton discussed the membership directory and has looked into grants for publication.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:54PM.

Respectfully submitted,
Kevin Glaeski
