Councillors' Report

New Orleans ACS Meeting, August, 1999

Attendance at the meeting was about 9800; this was a little lower than the projected attendance. 134 employers posted 954 jobs and 954 job seekers were registered, more than 2000 interviews were held. Council passed a recommendation from the Committee on meeting and expositions to tie the registration fees of undergraduate and graduate students to those of members. Both of these will rise slowly, $5 per year for undergraduates and $10 per year for graduate students, until the fee for undergraduates reaches the level of 25% and that of graduate students reaches 50% of the member advanced registration fee.

Some very significant things happened for the Milwaukee Section. We were nominated for the Grassroots award and two Phoenix awards. The Grassroots award is for active participation in the ACS 2001 Membership Campaign while Phoenix awards are for National Chemistry Week. We received a Special Phoenix award of recognition for the program in which students wrote grant proposals for improving the environmental quality of our area. Tom Holme of UWM received the 1999 Helen Free award for public outreach. He has had a long-standing relationship with the local NBC affiliate and regularly appears on its news programs. He talks about and demonstrates chemistry experiments that parents can do with their children. Congratulations, Tom. Incidentally, Tom will be one of the Milwakee section Councilors beginning with the new year as Chuck Wilkie steps down.
