Web Scavenger Hunt Rules and Prizes
Dates: - 5:00PM Wednesday, October 20 to 5:00PM Saturday, October 23, 2004
- The scavenger hunt is for teams of two students, attending a secondary school (or grade equivalent in a K-12 school) in the area served by the Milwaukee Section of the American Chemical Society. This area encompasses Jefferson, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Sheboygan, Walworth, Washington, and Waukesha counties.
- Teams must be registered before the scavenger hunt begins in order to be eligible for prizes. Registration must be done via the internet at the link found on the "Hunt Central" page and in conjunction with a high school teacher (not required to be a chemistry teacher). Registration will take place between 9:00AM Monday, October 18 and 5:00PM Tuesday, October 19, 2004. Closing has been extended to Wednesday, October 20 at 5:00PM.
- The scavenger hunt will begin at 5:00 PM on Wednesday, October 20th, 2004 (when the link on the "Hunt Central" pagee will be activated), and end at 5:00 PM on Saturday, October 23rd, 2004. All entries must be submitted prior to 5:00 PM Saturday to be judged. All submissions will be on-line and via the link on the "Hunt Central" page.
- Item to be researched for the scavenger hunt must be found on internet sites. In order for an answer to be graded, it must include an active URL at the time of judging. This URL must also give the exact address of the source of information and not a general site for which the answer was linked to within.
Note: Although the judging will take place in a timely manner following the submission of the answers, it is possible that a URL may change the content of a particular site or be unavailable (deactivated). In order to have a current URL at the time of judging, teams should be advised to choose reputable sites for consistency in availability and accuracy of material.
- Students do not have to submit answers for every question, but will not be penalized for incorrect answers.
- A panel of judges will determine the accuracy of the answers and web sites. These judges will be professional chemists in industry and academia within southeastern Wisconsin.
- Judging will be based on the following points scale:
- Accurate site and excellent explanation (3 points)
- Accurate site and good explanation (2 points)
- Accurate site and inaccurate explanation (1 point)
- Inaccurate site (or unfound), regardless of explanation (0 points)
- Note: Poor writing may result in a lower score (since the score is based on the quality of the explanation)
- In the event of a tie, the earliest full submission will be awarded the higher prize.
- Winners will be notified through their schools (and subsequently through their teacher). Winning students will each receive gift certificates to Mayfair Mall in Milwaukee.
- Names of winning students and their teachers will be published in The Amalgamator (the newsletter of the Milwaukee Section of the American Chemical Society) and on this web site. If possible, pictures will also be published in print and electronic forms of this newsletter.
All participating students will receive a token gift of participation.
All winning students will receive a gift certificate to Mayfair Mall in Milwaukee. These certificates are redeemable at any store in the mall.
- 1st place team - $45 certificates (each)
- 2nd place team - $35 certificates (each)
- 3rd place team - $25 certificates (each)
It is the assumption of the organizers for National Chemistry Week in the Milwaukee Section, that any student who enters this contest is allowed by their school district to participate in academic contests and accept prizes for their efforts.
