2002 National Chemistry Week
Theme: Chemistry Keeps Us Clean
Activities
The Milwaukee Section had another successful National Chemistry Week. The theme was "Chemistry Keeps Us Clean". Three events were highlighted:
- shows at Discovery World for elementary school students;
- a web based Scavenger Hunt for high school students;
- a Collection Contest of cleaning and personal hygiene products by the SAACS groups for donation to a local charity. (Note: Due to lack of participation, no prize was awarded.
Michael Schuder of Carroll College headed the NCW effort.

Scavenger Hunt
- First Year Chemistry Course There were 107 teams entered with 56 teams submitting answers. A team is one or two students. The schools represented were: Arrowhead, Brookfield Central, Catholic Central High School, Catholic Memorial, Cedarburg, Divine Saviors Holy Angels, East Troy, Menomonee Falls, Muskego, Pius XI High School, St. Joan Antida, Waukesha South, and Alexander Hamilton. The winning teams (the first with all 10 questions answered correctly):
- 1st Place: Jessica Watkins and Jill Katheiser, Menomonee Falls H. S.
- 2nd Place: Bryan Henry, Catholic Memorial H.S.
- 3rd Place: Bryan Larrivee and Tommy Schweitzer, Cedarburg H.S.
- Second Year or AP Chemistry Courses There were 36 teams entered and 15 submitted answers. The schools represented were: Arrowhead, Brookfield Central, Catholic Central, Catholic Memorial, Cedarburg, New Berlin West, Park - Racine, St. Joan Antida, and Waukesha South, The winning teams were:
- 1st Place: Andy Kellner and Sam Eckels, Arrowhead H. S.
- 2nd Place: Tina Liu and Kelsey Schuder, Waukesha South H.S.
- 3rd Place: Ellery Brooks and Kristin Jansen, New Berlin West
(The 1st and 2nd place teams got all 10 of the questions correct and the third place team was the first to get 9 out of 10 correct.)
- The prizes awarded for each student were a gift certificates at Mayfair Mall:
- 1st place: $50 gift certificate
- 2nd place: $25 gift certificate
- 3rd place: $10 gift certificate

Discovery Word Activities
Only four shows were given at Discovery World since NCW occured during the week that the local schools had a short week due to teacher conventions. The shows were presented by students from Carroll College and UWM. The participants were -

A list of the demonstrations performed and pictures are shown below.

Note: Not all demonstrations were performed by all demonstrators.
Genie in a Bottle
- The catalytic decomposition of H2O2 to evolve heat resulting in a steam cloud comming from the bottle.
Disappearing Ink
- When sprayed on white fabric, the ink will disappear after a few seconds.
Bleaching Fabric
- Whitening actionof commercially available chlorine bleach.
Iodine Solution
- Iodine solution chemically changed from brown/red to blue (once starch is added) to colorless (with the addition of thiosulfate.
Styrofoam Race
- Using two large beakers, one with water and the other with acetone, the participants try to fill the beakers with styrofoam packing "popcorn". The popcorn disolves in the acetone.
Light Bulbs
- The activation of fluorescent light bulbs with static electricity.
Old Fashioned Drain Cleaner
- A mixture of baking soda and vinegar can be used as an alternative to Drain-O.
Glowing Gummy Bear
- A gummy bear candy is oxidized rapidly in a test tube to generate a large amount of heat so that the candy glows.
CO2 Shower
- Soap encapsulates carbon dioxide gas into a bubble. Since the CO2 bubble is more dense than air, it will sink to the ground.
Elephant Toothpaste
- The decomposition of H2O2 evolves oxygen, which becomes trapped in the soap and forms a frothy mess.
Halloween Colors
- The catalytic decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) via a color change. In a iron nitrate solution, the addition of hydrogen peroxide results in a color change from orange to black back to orange.
Methanol Cannon
- Sparking vaporized methanol to blow out a stopper on a bottle.
Electric Pickle
- The heating and glowing of a whole pickle when an electric current is passed thfough it.
Burning Money
- The difference of burning of paper with pure ethanol and burning paper (money) with a ethanol-water solution.
Whoosher Bottle
- The burning of methonal in a large carboy to create a whooshing sound.
Hydrogen Ballons
- The ignition of ballons inflated with hydrogen gas.
